Our music production toolkit combines authentic African instruments with a cutting-edge, vibrant Kontakt engine, delivering genre-crossing, unimagined sounds that push the boundaries of modern music. From urban pop to cinematic thunderous percussion soundscapes, this toolkit is designed for producers and composers seeking innovative ways to craft their music. We took our inspiration from the groundbreaking work of Cristobal Tapia de Veer – White Lotus. A simple idea really of taking authentic traditional sounds and instruments and putting them through some production tricks to make something unheard and truly unique.

South Africa is a complicated place but those of us that are fortunate enough to call it home, live with a huge variety of musical traditions and blended cultures. Black Lotus Toolkit takes this one step further. It pushes all that into a refined, production-friendly toolkit for the producer and composer looking for something different. Something unheard. Something revolutionary. We have taken 8 instruments and made a production toolkit that spans genres. Dundun, Frame Drums, Sticks, Reed Shaker, Reed Pipe, Bamboo Pipes, Bow and a unique Bass Marimba all sound unlike anything you have heard before.

Dundun
Handcrafted from a single piece of hollowed-out tree trunk and pelt skinned,. The dundun reveals typically short muted sounds which lends itself perfectly to drum sections because they lack the sustained ringing of a djembe. This collection of five Dunduns played with hands, mallets and sticks with a curated collection of over 200 midi loops and presets.

Frame Drum
The frame drums featured here are notably large, with pelt skins, producing a warm muted tone. As one of the oldest and most widely used instruments in history, the frame drum has rich cultural significance across many ancient civilizations.

Sticks
We’ve crafted the stick sound we’ve been seeking for years. Drawing inspiration from Woodkid’s Run Boy Run, we blended Dundun stick articulations with various metal stick sounds to create something distinctive. With options to play individual samples or use one-key strikes with built-in humaniser controls, Sticks lets us fine-tune the tone for a truly one-of-a-kind stick sound.

Reed Shaker
A simple yet rhythmically captivating shaker, unique to the African continent. Crafted from reeds, sewn together and filled with seeds, it is traditionally played with both hands, moving it from side to side while slapping with the thumbs.

Bass Marimba

Reed Pipe
The long Zulu umtshingo has an obliquely cut embouchure and no finger holes, producing overblown harmonics by covering and uncovering the lower end. In cities, reeds are often replaced with PVC pipe. Black Lotus takes this further, letting you manipulate, bend, and stretch the sound into wild soundscapes. Yet it remains humble, delivering tender, voice-like tones that echo the spirit of Ennio Morricone’s The Mission.

Bow
The Uhadi is a distinctive bowed instrument renowned for its deep, resonant tones. Traditionally made from a gourd and animal gut, it is played by drawing a bow across the string, producing rich, expressive sounds. Black Lotus takes this sound further, allowing you to shape and transform its timbre into unique textures while preserving its soulful, evocative character.

Bamboo Pipe
The Pan Pipe, also known as the Bamboo Pipe or Nyanga Pan Pipes, is a captivating instrument with a warm, ethereal sound. It features a series of pipes of varying lengths, each producing a unique tone when blown across. Black Lotus expands on this sound, allowing you to manipulate and transform its resonant qualities into new, imaginative textures, while retaining the instrument’s enchanting and melodic essence

Grooves
Dundun, Frame Drum and Sticks all come with a handcrafted selection of midi grooves to get you composing straight away. All grooves come with an inherent preset that you can load at the same time using the Load With Sound Preset button. You can also choose to keep your preset and only load the grooves.

Our selection of effects has been carefully crafted and fine-tuned to make the production and composing experience as inspiring as possible. The randomiser gets a special mention (because it is awesome) designed to generate new ideas quickly.
